ERC-20 USDT Gas Fee
Ethereum (ERC-20) is the original blockchain for USDT and remains the most widely supported network. However, it is also the most expensive: sending USDT on Ethereum typically costs between $5 and $30, and can exceed $50 during periods of extreme congestion.
Why Are ERC-20 USDT Fees So High?
Ethereum charges fees in "gas" — a unit measuring the computational work required to execute a transaction. The total fee is calculated as: Gas Units Used × Gas Price (in Gwei). A standard ERC-20 token transfer uses around 65,000 gas units. When the Ethereum network is busy, validators prioritise transactions with higher gas prices, driving up costs for everyone.
Current ERC-20 USDT Gas Fee Ranges (2025)
- Low congestion: $3 – $8
- Normal conditions: $8 – $15
- High congestion: $15 – $30
- Extreme congestion (e.g. NFT launches, DeFi events): $30 – $100+
When Are Ethereum Gas Fees Lowest?
Ethereum gas fees are lowest during off-peak hours, typically between midnight and 4:00 AM UTC on weekdays. Weekend mornings UTC also tend to see lower activity. Using a gas tracker tool (such as ETH Gas Station or Etherscan Gas Tracker) can help you time your transfers for the cheapest windows.
Alternatives to ERC-20 for USDT Transfers
If both you and the recipient can accept USDT on another network, consider these cheaper alternatives:
- TRC-20 (TRON): Under $1 per transaction
- BEP-20 (BNB Chain): Under $0.50 per transaction
- Polygon: Under $0.01 per transaction
The main advantage of ERC-20 is universal exchange support — almost every exchange worldwide accepts ERC-20 USDT, whereas not all support TRC-20 or BEP-20 deposits.
How to Pay Less for ERC-20 USDT
Set a maximum gas price (in Gwei) that you are willing to pay and use a wallet that allows custom gas settings (such as MetaMask). The transaction will be processed when the network gas price drops to your limit. This technique works well for non-urgent transfers but may take hours or days during sustained congestion.
